| FLORENCE SPECIAL TOUR |
| Thursday, June 3 |
English-speaking guides will meet you at the port of Livorno and escort you on the leisurely drive through Tuscany en
route to Italy’s “treasure chest”—the city of Florence.
The Uffizi Gallery
Italy’s preeminent art gallery, the Uffizi, was constructed between 1560 and 1581 by Cosimo I de Medici. His son,
Francesco I de Medici, used the palace to display his family’s vast art treasures. Over the years, the collection
grew to include works by such famous artists as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Botticelli, and Raphael.
Lunch with Ross King
Following the morning tour, we will have lunch at a local restaurant where Ross King will discuss
the story of Brunelleschi’s Dome – the Duomo.
The Duomo
The Basilica de Santa Maria del Fiore is crowned by an imposing dome (duomo), an engineering marvel larger than the domes
of the U.S. Capitol, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and St. Peter’s in Rome. It was built by Filippo
Brunelleschi from 1420 to 1436. From the cathedral’s square, admire the Gothic bell tower by Giotto and the
Romanesque baptistery with gilded bronze doors sculpted by Lorenzo Ghiberti.
The Accademia Gallery
Originally founded as the Academy of Fine Arts in 1563, this was the first school in Europe to teach the techniques of
drawing, painting, and sculpture. The art collection displayed here was formed in 1784 to provide material for students
to study and copy. The most famous work on display is Michelangelo’s David.
Following our tour, we will board the motor coaches for the return to the Crystal Symphony.
Attendance is limited; you must pre-register to attend this tour. $375 per person, includes transfers, admission
fees, lunch, and lecture by Ross King.
